Waterproofing - how is it actually?


Waterproof telephones started a new era of communication and recording moments even in an environment that until then was taboo for electronics. These waterproofing devices have gained a huge marketing and competitive advantage, and large technology companies pump enormous amounts of money into the system of the best waterproofing. But let's discuss what it's like with that waterproofness.

Water resistance, resp. waterproofing does not mean the same as waterproofing. Water-resistant devices have a certain degree of vulnerability and are certainly not 100% resistant to the effects of water and moisture. Unlike waterproofing materials, which have truly specific waterproof properties, water-resistance only forms a closed barrier that protects sensitive internal components and electronic circuits. Most devices, which are referred to as water-resistant or waterproof, can survive in a freshwater environment, but the problem occurs when they come under the influence of e.g. salt water, chlorinated water, various sweetened and bubbly beverages such as cola or champagne, which break various rubber seals and degrade water tightness 🍾

Phones that have cracks or have damaged packaging are several times more susceptible to water damage. Waterproof devices are marked with the international IP scale, which numbers their resistance, e.g. IP68 or IPX8 and this means that the device has been tested by immersion underwater at a depth of one meter under pressure (highest degree of protection), but the conditions are specified by the manufacturer. Thus, it is clear from this that even water-resistant devices have their limits and do not have waterproofing properties, they only form a barrier that protects the entry of water into the inside of the device under certain conditions.
